Kinnickinnic State Park
Exploring Kinnickinnic State Park: Where the River Meets the St. Croix
Just a short drive from River Falls, Wisconsin, Kinnickinnic State Park is a hidden gem where two rivers—the Kinnickinnic and the St. Croix—come together in breathtaking beauty. Known simply as “the Kinni” by locals, this park blends sandy beaches, forest trails, and river bluffs into a year-round outdoor paradise.
A Park with Two Personalities
The Kinnickinnic River winds gently through wooded valleys before spilling into the mighty St. Croix, creating a stunning confluence that attracts both outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers. The park covers 1,242 acres, offering a mix of sandy shoreline, rolling prairie, and shaded oak forests .
On one side, you’ll find wide-open views of the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway, perfect for soaking up sunsets. On the other, quiet forest trails lead you deep into Wisconsin’s natural beauty.
Hiking, Fishing, and More
Kinnickinnic State Park features over 7 miles of hiking trails, many of which loop through restored prairies and oak savannas. The trails are family-friendly, with gentle climbs and plenty of opportunities to spot deer, wild turkeys, and songbirds. In the winter, many of these same trails are groomed for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
Anglers love the park for its world-class trout fishing on the Kinni River, one of the best cold-water fisheries in the Midwest. The river’s clear waters hold brook and brown trout, making it a fly-fishing destination worth traveling for.
A Beach Day on the St. Croix
One of the park’s most unique features is its sandy beach along the St. Croix River. Families often spend the day swimming, picnicking, and lounging by the water, while boaters pull up along the shoreline to enjoy the park from the river side.
